Tomtom favorites file

I'm at a loss and have no idea where my TomTom favorites file went?

The TomTom favorites file often disappears after a TomTom update, much to the frustration of users. It can also disappear after importing a new map, again frustrating to users. Depending on your device, the favorites file is either stored in a file named mapsettings.cfg or favorites.ov2. Unfortunately, if you have not backed up this file, it is most likely gone for good.

If you did backup the file, then restoring the mapsettings.cfg or favorites.ov2 file is your next step. First, connect your TomTom device to your computer using its USB cable. Now, right-click Start on your PC and choose Open Windows Explorer. From here, you'll need to locate the backup stored on your computer and then drag and drop it into your TomTom's Maps folder.

If you periodically backup the entire TomTom device to your computer, you should have an older copy of your TomTom favorites file stored on your PC. It should be located under C:\users\[your user name]\Documents\TomTom\Home. Find the mapsettings.cfg file in this location and copy and paste it over to your TomTom device. Since the backup file will be older than your lost file, it will likely be missing some of your more recently added favorites. However, it's better than starting with no favorites at all.

Because the favorites file is often overwritten, it's smart to save a backup copy of your TomTom favorites file. Once you have a backup, you can later restore the file should it ever go missing again. In order to do this, you will need to connect your TomTom device to your computer via its USB cable.

Depending on your device, you may have a built-in option for saving the POI sets to your computer. Click the TomTom icon in the taskbar and click on Add Community Content. Find the file named Favorites.ov2 under the "POI sets on device" section and click Copy to Computer. Save the backup to your computer in a location where you will later remember it.

When you want to restore the TomTom favorites file, connect the device to your computer, click the TomTom icon in the taskbar, and click on Add Community Content. Browse to the location where you previously saved the Favorites.ov2 file, select it, click Open, and click Install.

If you have an older device that does not use POI sets, then connect the computer to the device and use Windows Explorer to manually copy and paste the device's mapsettings.cfg file to your computer.
